In response to international processes that direct national climate change frameworks and policies, there is an increased need to develop strategies for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs), Climate Change Adaptation, and Low Carbon development.
Strategies to combat the effects of climate change at a landscape level provide multiple opportunities because of their combined mitigation and adaptation potential. Strategies optimising landscape values should incorporate a diversity of sectors such as forestry, agriculture, mining, and energy, and enhance innovation and use of eco-technologies. This process requires broad stakeholder consultation and buy-in as well as the cooperation of policy makers, researchers and civil society.
Indufor’s approach to providing strategic advice on climate change focuses on optimising the mitigation and adaptation potential of landscapes at both the national and sub-national levels. We define goals, targets and principles, and specifically include institutional, legal, governance and land issues, as well as gender, benefit sharing, financing and safeguard issues in our approach. We employ broad stakeholder consultation techniques and understand the most relevant threats and opportunities when we provide strategic advice.
